Focus on latest records from French label Circum-Disc, coordinated by drummer Peter Orrins.
CIRCUM is a collective of jazz musicians based in the MALTERIE in Lille (FRANCE), created in 2000 to promote contemporary jazz. The group merged in 2010 with the CRIME to form the collective Muzzix.
Created in 2004, the Circum-Disc label wants to present, in a medium other than the concert, new music, accomplished with a real artistic line, both in terms of sound, music or graphic.

Toc like not to define themselves… Tirelessly searching since their creation in 2008 where the practice of improvisation will lead them, the three musicians multiply forms and encounters, like to get lost in aesthetics and styles, disturb the landmarks. As their name seems to indicate, Toc’s members are quite obsessive and even compulsive. Their frenetic, ritualized but non-contagious behaviors bring the listener in a hectic space-time before bringing him back to the mainland in a more or less troubled state.
In addition to their taste for improvisation without barriers or eyes, Toc and Dave Rempis share a communicative energy and power, play the density and the organic and joyful trance.

In April 2019, Toc performs its first North American road-trip, and between the Canadian snow and the Baltimore humidity, appears for the 3 musicians the desire to come back to record in a studio. They hadn’t had a chance to do so since the recording of You Can Dance (If You Want) (2012), focusing on instantaneous and live composition: the band’s music is shaped with the audience.
So they locked themselves up, before anyone else, in September 2019 for a few days in the Aveyron countryside, where ideas were thrown away, built and deconstructed, always improvised but triturated, arranged, amplified. Always eager to amalgamate sounds and styles, the trio unravels its influences and other bad habits by allowing itself to experiment. Pulse, breath, troubled perspectives, Toc’s psychotropic music crosses the styles we vainly try to attach to it: kraut, post-rock, jazz-core, drone… If energy and electricity are always present, suspensive daydreams also appear, magnetic ambiences where electronics and acoustics mix.
A variety record, therefore, in its first sense, where we see other possibilities for these explorative and enthusiast musicians.
